Offshore wind power is the biggest asset of world’s maritime economy, ready to revolutionize the entire energy sector. Its biggest advantage consists in harnessing the strong and consistent offshore winds. Moreover, this is an environmentally friendly way to generate electricity, since wind farms have smaller to none impact on the landscape and emit no air pollutants or greenhouse gases.
Fixed wind turbines are suitable for shallow coastal waters up to 50 meters deep. Gravity-based foundations are one of the most common and most promising types of fixed offshore wind turbine foundations. Conventional foundations have a concrete support structure or integrated concrete ballast.
FMGC offers the MRE sector cast iron ballast, which is stronger and denser than concrete and it requires only simple pain and coating to stay protected from corrosion. FMGC cast iron ballast can be directly integrated in the foundation while reducing the concrete structure’s weight and size and improving its navigability. Moreover, cast iron is a recycled product and all cast iron ballast units can be also recycled when no more needed.
